Christian Fox has put his first piece of silverware in the Selby Town trophy cabinet after Gary Collier’s goal guided them past Goole AFC to claim the Eric Lawton Trophy.
Fox will hope it is the start of magical things to come as he bids to take them on a rocket ride to the moon.
It is the first time that Selby have won the annual contest with Goole since the Dave Ricardo era.
The winning goal was far from swashbuckling, a term associated with Selby since Fox’s much-heralded arrival last year. It came on the hour mark and Collier was credited with it after a mass scramble inside Goole’s six-yard-box.
Goals from Luke Williams and Darren Mansaram saw Armthorpe Welfare run out 2-1 winners against higher league Bottesford Town.
With 30 seconds on the clock Jordan Buckham was fouled some 35 yards out and he immediately played a quick free-kick forward for Williams to lob the ball over the advancing keeper from the edge of the box to put Welfare ahead.
Goalkeeper Adam Stevens kept Welfare ahead on 12 minutes when he dived to his left to save a low angled shot and three minutes later Welfare had a good chance when Hodgson had a good run from half way into the Bottesford box before squaring to Williams who fired over the bar.
Bottesford equalised on 20 minutes when Welfare justifiably appealed for a foul on Williams on half way but the referee wasn’t impressed, enabling the visitors to break quickly, playing an excellent through ball for their striker to plant the ball past Stevens.
Two minutes after the break Williams had an angled shot which flew straight at the keeper and, having introduced three of his substitutes at half time manager Mike Carmody introduced the other three on 62 minutes. Within two minutes the ball was played into Mansaram who was in acres of space inside the box to control the ball before firing in to put Welfare ahead.
