Lee Morris insists the top ten is very much a realistic goal for his young Worsbrough Bridge team.
Morris is standing by comments made to Barnsley Chronicle in May in which he said he was aiming to lead a push for the play-offs.
The play-offs are no longer in existent, but Morris is still hoping to raise the bar at Park Road and end four years of real toil which has seen them battle to avoid the drop in three of the four seasons since club legend Chris Hilton stood down as manager.
“I don’t regret saying it because you have to have big expectations,” Morris told Non League Yorkshire.
“It is alright saying to the lads ‘come here, we’re going to finish mid-table’, but no-one buys into that.
“I want to be successful. For the club, any progression on last season is a better season
“Me personally, I want to get this club back in the FA Cup so we have to get into the top ten to have a chance. I would be over the moon with that.
“For the club, a season without a relegation battle would be a success. Since Chris Hilton was down here, the club hasn’t had much to cheer about. Crowds have dropped too.
“Shaw Lane have gone now. Barnsley needs another club on the up. Wouldn’t it be great if that club was Worsbrough and we got more through the gate?
“It will take time for things to come together, but I’ve said before that if I had these lads all season, we’d have been top ten (last season) and I still believe it now.
“When you look at the performances against the top teams, we should have picked up more points than we got.
“It is a new season and we have some fantastic players at this club. They are all good friends as well. They all hang out together and the dressing room is the best I’ve ever had.
“These lads can go as far as they want because they are confident and love playing football. If you are all mates, you run the extra yard for each other. These lads do.”
Worsbrough only won seven league games during the whole of last season, but they did draw a lot of matches thanks to heroics displays.
A number of the stalemates were against top sides such as promoted Eccleshill United, Selby Town and Grimsby Borough.
Although he did not go into too much detail, it looks like Morris is planning to get his Worsbrough team playing in a swashbuckling manner.
“We are going to change the way we play, I’m not going to reveal too much though,” he said.
“Everywhere I’ve been, Goole, Frickley, Worsbrough, it has been a relegation battle so I’ve always had to go 4-5-1 and scrap for every single point. I’ve always to play the way we’re going to do.
“Me, (assistant) David Taylor and (new coach) Mark (Arundel) sat down and set down how we want to play.
“I’m a attacker and I want to score goals and attack with a purpose. In the four sessions we have done we have worked on attacking with a purpose.
“At Athersley we looked really good and we did tonight (against Penistone) in spells. This is against two Premier Division sides. These lads have shown they can definitely play the way we want to.
“From where we were (when I took over), we are worlds apart.”
