Winterton Rangers 1-2 Selby Town
Super-sub Charlie Clamp cued pandemonium with the most outrageous 95th minute winner for Selby Town in the top of the table clash at ten man Winterton Rangers.
Clamp’s 30-yard volley – a clear goal of the season contender – came out of absolutely nothing and broke a stalemate that had been in place since the end of the first half.
Liam Nelthorpe had cancelled out Liam Flanagan’s opener and the Winterton were happy to settle for a point having played with ten men since the 15th minute after former Selby striker and the league’s leading goal-scorer Luke Anderson was sent off.
However, Winterton have only themselves to blame for Clamp being to score as it was their excessive time-wasting that allowed for over five minutes of stoppage time.
After the euphoria of winning all their opening eight games – six against teams who occupy bottom half positions – the wheels appear to come off Winterton who have lost to two fellow sides who are hungry for success in the space of four days.
One of their centre halves also somehow escaped a red card after the final whistle after sprinting 30 yards to aggressively harangue referee Alex Sawden – sparking a mass brawl in the process.
The home side were an angry team for a lot of the encounter with Selby and they didn’t get off to the best starts
To say Selby hadn’t played for two weeks, they flew out of the blocks as Flanagan netted from close range in the second minute. Electric Sam Cable then nearly doubled the lead after hitting the post.
Selby’s task was seemingly made easier when Anderson saw red after an altercation with left-back Alex Robinson. Instead the dismissal only served to galvanise Winterton as they did not play like a team with ten men.
The Robins failed to take advantage and the turning down of a stonewall penalty for a handball was the only other real noteworthy point to occur at the Winterton end in the rest of the first half.
Selby will have been disappointed with the way Winterton equalised as Nelthorpe was given far too much room to break into the penalty area and fire a low shot past Peter Lawrie.
The visitors lived on the edge at the beginning of the second half. Lawrie was superb in many ways – his shot stopping and distribution in particular.
Selby began to exert control around the hour mark, but found it really hard to hurt their hosts. For all their possession, Selby never truly tested Jordan Quibell. The goalkeeper reacted quick to deny a through Flanagan at one point, but that was really it and it looked like Selby had blown the chance to beat a rival.
As stoppage time approached, two or three minutes would have been sufficient. However, the home side chose to time-waste in a ridiculous way. They messed about over a corner in one instance, but it was a non-existent head injury that caused the most ire from Selby’s perspective.
However, the referee was correctly stopping his watch on every occasion and ultimately the home side were punished.
The home side were screaming at Mr Sawden to blow up as Clamp received the ball 30 yards out. Spotting the home goalkeeper off-his-line, the former Leeds United youngster literally went for broke. Quilbell realised straightaway that he was in trouble and desperately raced back.
They was nothing he could do and Clamp watched the ball sail home just underneath the crossbar in the middle of the goal before racing towards his inspirational leader Christian Fox where he was met by every single one of his team-mates and the club’s management team.
Winterton’s players simply slumped to their knees.
