Ossett defeat Ashforth’s Clitheroe

FA Trophy

Ossett United 2-1 Clitheroe

Clitheroe boss Lee Ashforth used to manage Harrogate Railway and Ossett Town

Ossett United eventually progressed to the next Round of the FA Trophy, but they made hard work of it against former Ossett Town manager Lee Ashforth’s Clitheroe.

Clitheroe looked the sharper of the two sides at the start of this match, playing with width on the counter-attack. It was this tactic that brought them their goal with just over 15 minutes of the match gone. They cleared an Ossett United corner and quickly moved the ball to the other end where Lewis Sugden slotted it into the United net.

Adam Priestley had two good chances to level things up but both were well saved by Cameron Terry in the Clitheroe goal so the visitors went in leading at the interval.

Within five minutes of the restart United had equalised. The ball was worked down the left and Priestley finished well when it came to him.

The rest of the game belonged to United as they created chances but Clitheroe managed to clear everything and they were saved by the post on one occasion. In the end United took the game when Tom Corner scored the winner.

After an incident in the Clitheroe goal-mouth, Jason Jefferies took matters into his own hands when he hacked Corner down. As a result he was dismissed and United progressed.
