Glasshoughton Welfare 1-3 Worsbrough Bridge
Liam Owen sealed Worsbrough’s 3-1 win at Glasshoughton with a header
Surprise-package Worsbrough Bridge are up to fourth after coming from behind to condemn Glasshoughton Welfare to another defeat.
Lewis Pickering’s early strike was cancelled out by Jack Wilson, and young Bridge dynamos Jack Mawson and Liam went onto seal the victory for Lee Morris’ side.
Glasshoughton remain in 9th position in the league, and despite the defeat, the team put in a much better performance than in recent weeks. Sadly the game was turned on hits head early in the second half with the sending off within minutes of influential players Matty Bowman and skipper Gareth Hunter.
Welfare made a number of changes for the game and a notable one was the introduction of Charlie Williams at fullback for a full debut. Up against Welfare were former players Connor Rollinson, Fidel Mholo and Rob Oldham.
Welfare conceded an early corner but in heavy rain Aiden Tyas in the visitors goal collected a 25 yards Tafadzwa Mumbanya free kick. Tyas showed his quality seconds later when his great block stopped Ryan Poskitt from giving Welfare the lead.
Welfare did take the lead on 10 minutes when a superb ball from Mumbanya on the left found Pickering and he ran on and shot across Tyas into the far corner.
The lead was short lived as four minutes later Worsborough equalised. Welfare failed to clear a high ball on the edge of their penalty area and Owen threaded the ball across the penalty area to Wilson who shot low past Mateus Zaniewski.
Welfare looked a lot better going forward than in recent weeks and only another great Tyas block prevented Pickering scoring when one on one with the keeper.
That proved costly for Welfare as minutes later Mawson slotted home after some good interlinking play from the visitors.
Welfare tried to come back and Bowman had a shot charged down and Pickering was crowded out by the visitors defence as he attempted to get past them.
Welfare started the second half brightly and Tyas managed to drop onto a low ball played in by Poskitt.
Ten minutes into the restart Welfare were down to ten men when Bowman saw red and within another five minutes they lost influential captain Hunter to a second yellow card.
Despite the numerical disadvantage Welfare did not give up and unfortunately Jack Knight dithered too long on the ball when well placed and the chance was lost. Adam Walsh then headed a free-kick over the bar.
Worsborough were not causing the nine men of Welfare too much problems and were fortunate to get a third goal with 15 minutes left. A deep cross was played into the home penalty area and the unfortunate Zaniewski lost his footing which allowed Owen a simple header to seal the game.
It would have been unfair on welfare to concede a further goal but they were lucky in the last minutes when a Rollinson shot was deflected wide by Jamie Austin.

“We’re going through a very tough time at the moment. It is very frustrating because it is the same group of players that started the season so well. Unfortunately we are now making it very easy for the opposition by gifting them goals.
“Again we started very well and created a number of chances and went ahead with a very well taken goal. It could have got better but for a couple of very good saves. But again we surrendered the lead giving away two silly goals that just should have been defended better.
“Then to cap it off getting two players sent off with the majority of the second half still to play was an impossible task. Credit to the nine lads still on the pitch they battled very hard and created chances to get back on terms.
“Again a stupid error near the end killed off any chance of getting anything from the game. One thing is for sure if we can cut out the individual errors we can, and will, get our season going again. We look forward to more work in training this week and another chance next Saturday to get things going again.”
