Just under £2000 was raised at the first Lucille Rollinson Memorial Tournament as Connor won the bragging rights over his brother Calan after his Springwell side won the trophy.
The Tournament, held at Barnsley College, was a fitting tribute to their mother Lucille who passed away in August last year. The money raised will make difference for Leukaemia UK and Disability Football projects in Barnsley.
Ten teams competed for the trophy with around 80 players taking part in the soaring heat . Fittingly the final pitted Connor’s Springwell side against Calan’s Lucille’s All Stars team.
Springwell triumphed 2-0. Target man Jack Teasdale opened the scoring with a finish that from some angles looked world class, but from others appeared fortuitous.
Dan Morris then sprinted clear to add the second goals a few minutes later.
A lot of the leading lights from the local Non League scene turned out as Showman Ryan Poskitt managed a team that contained stellar names such as Jimmy Whitehead, Lee Garside and Gareth Hunter.
The likes of Jack Mawson, Kane Reece, Liam Owen and former Worsbrough Bridge defender Joe Singleton also featured for teams.
Nick Handley, the ex-Pontefract Collieries captain and manager, was a crucial defensive linchpin of the triumphant Springwell outfit.
Worsbrough players Connor and Calan said: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated and took part yesterday, overall it was a fantastic day all for a good cause.
“Thank you to everyone who assisted in organising teams, selling raffles and refereeing the match’s.
“Big thank you to Honeywell sports centre who let us host our event at the amazing centre and the hard work of each member of staff.
“If our Mam Lucille Rollinson could of seen the turnout she would have been overwhelmed, as we were.”
