Ossett United 6-2 Selby Town
BetVictor North West side Ossett United had way too much for massive underdogs Selby Town in the rain at Ingfield.
Goals from Elliott Harrison, Marko Basic, Corey Gregory, Nick Guest and two trialists eased Andy Welsh’s Ossett to a routine victory.
Selby had a brief glimmer of a comeback after Joe Dale and Carter made the score 3-2. That was until Ossett moved up a gear and made the win safe.
It was always going to be mission impossible for Christian Fox’s Selby, playing against a team two leagues higher.
Ossett dominated and visiting goalkeeper Pete Lawrie was a busy man. He had made one top save prior to Harrison netting with a header.
Lawrie then had to make several saves to keep United at bay – including from one shot from former Farsley Celtic striker Damian Reeves.
However, he could not do much about a fabulous strike from an Ossett trialist who managed to find Lawrie’s right-hand top corner with an effort from a difficult angle.
That goal ended the first half. But if the spectators thought that would be the goal of the night, Basic had that up his sleeve in the second half. Outrageous sums it up. His critics will say it was a cross, but Basic’s shot/cross (delete as applicable) from the right wing found its way into the far top corner.
Both teams began making changes and Fox’s reinforcements did the business initially. Magic man Joe Dale pounced on Ossett’s defence falling asleep to drill the ball home from close range.
Carter then unleashed a tremendous long range strike to further reduce the deficit and trigger hopes of what was seemingly an unlikely fight-back.
Those hopes were quickly extinguished as former Stocksbridge Park Steels key man Gregory managed scramble home a fourth goal for Ossett.
From there on it was mainly Ossett. A trialist added the fifth before Nick Guest, a familiar name on a Non League Yorkshire match report over the past five years, got himself on the score-sheet.
