Deadly centre-half duo Andy McManus and Dom Riordan guided Emley AFC to a 2-0 victory at struggling Garstang.

Emley had to be patient against Garstang who sacked former Barnsley striker Andy Payton in midweek and appointed his replacement Richard Cookney on Sunday morning.

Richard Tracey and Mark Wilson’s men dominated the first half, but despite their best efforts they were unable to score in the North West Counties First Division North clash.

The pressure told five minutes into the second half. Danger-man Rob Bordman’s corner was a beautiful delivery and Riordan rolled back the years with an unstoppable header.

They did not have to wait long for the second. Alex Metcalfe’s effort was saved and former Glasshoughton captain McManus pounced on the rebound like a gazelle and scored.

Emley now look forward to hosting the big Kirklees derby with new rivals Golcar United on Bank Holiday Monday.

Golcar needed a late equaliser from Ryan John Mackay to earn a point from the 1-1 home draw with Cleator Moor Celtic.

Steeton lost 2-1 to AFC Darren – Scott Stein gave them late hope.

Shelley were held to a goal-less draw at Nelson.
