Calum Ward got two as against the odds, threadbare Nostell Miners Welfare came from behind to beat AFC Liverpool 4-1 in the FA Vase first qualifying round.
The afternoon began badly after Danny Rusling went off injured in the warm-up and with a number of key star players already missing, Nostell were up against it against the North West Counties outfit.
But despite falling behind to a James McGrane strike, the Miners fought back with great spirit to reach the next round.
Man of the match Ward dragged his side back into it with the equaliser and the goal to make it 2-1 before the break.
Ward then turned provider after half-time by setting up wing wizard Richard Collier up for the third.
Liverpool began to lose the plot as on the hour, Anthony Lyons saw red for retaliation. Adam Hayton would seal the win after Danny Edwards played him in.
Liverpool had nine men for ten of the last 15 minutes as Jack Richards was sin-binned for dissent.
Welfare joint manager Jason Dodsworth said: “We showed great character to come from behind.
“We went into the game without Jack and Liam Owen, Kane Reece and also Jack Cowgill.
Our goalkeeper Dan Rusling pulled up in the warm up so we had a threadbare squad today.
“We started the game well but fell behind when the forward cut inside and beat Matt Brooke at the near post. We showed great character and went in at half time 2-1 up thanks to Callum Ward who worked hard all afternoon.
“We told the lads at half-time we hadn’t got going and if we did we could put the game to bed. Rich Collier finished in great style and Adam Hayton completed the comeback with our 4th. It was a fantastic performance from us and really pleasing for me and Simon (Houghton).”
