Nostell Miners Welfare 4-2 Barton Town
Jack Owen scored twice as Nostell Miners Welfare caused a major upset in the FA Vase second qualifying round by beating higher league Barton Town at Crofton Community Centre – despite a mini-crisis before kick off.
Nostell, enjoying their best period of history for years thanks to Jason Dodsworth and Simon Houghton’s calm and methodical management, ended up galloping into the next round as Owen, Ben Teasdale and Kane Reece gave them an unassailable 4-0 lead by the hour mark.
But the win was against the odds. Talismanic captain Rhys Meynell was ruled out before kick-off, adding to the list of unavailable players which included key man Danny Edwards.
However, once as midfielder Teasdale blasted home in the 17th minute, the Crofton-based club never looked back.
The floodgates opened straight after half-time with three goals in ten minutes. Owen’s indiduval effort doubled the lead before Calum Ward set-up Reece up.
Owen took on a defender before firing home for the fourth.
Marc Cooper and Craig Disley would reduce the deficit for Dave Ricardo’s Barton, but it too late for a dramatic comeback.
Dodsworth told Non League Yorkshire: “Great performance from us today.
“Our football wasn’t as fluent has it has been in recent games, but our work rate for each other was impeccable.
“We took a deserved lead into half time thanks to Ben (Teasdale), who stood in as our skipper.
“Jack Owen got two and a fantastic finish from Kane Reece, who I thought worked hard all game, put us 4-0 and we were cruising.
“But we took our foot of the gas and full credit to Barton they pulled two back and put a lot of pressure on us the last 15 minutes. But we held out for a great win and we’re in the hat.”
