Shane Kelsey clearly retired far too early as he came off the bench and scored an unbelievable hat-trick in the final 17 minutes to overturn a 2-0 deficit and earn Athersley Rec their first win of the season.
The Rec were on course to lose at Bottesford until half-time replacement Kelsey rolled back the years in the extraordinary climax to the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division clash.
The former Ossett Albion and Shaw Lane star Kelsey hung his boots up after helping Hemsworth Miners Welfare win promotion in 2016 and he wasn’t seen again on the Non League circuit again until he joined the Rec as player/coach in the summer.
Now he’s ended up playing again and he’s certainly re-living the old days.
Bottesford must have thought the three points were sown up when they led 2-0 at the break through Daniel Boulton and Jack McMenemy.
That’s until Kelsey intervened with two goals in the space of three minutes with quarter of an hour to go. The striker then sparked scenes of jubilation with the winner in the last minute.
Penistone Church were denied by a late Staveley Miners Welfare goal in the 1-1 draw. Kieran Ryan got Penistone’s goal.
Albion Sports overturned Sean Hunter’s goal for Garforth Town to win 3-1 at Throstle Nest.
Reece Farnhill, Alhassane Keita and Sidibe Ousmane scored.
