Glasshoughton Welfare 3-0 Campion
Glasshoughton Welfare produced a barnstorming performance to stun promotion-chasing Campion and end their nine-game winning run.
Josh Vamplew, Ashley Bell and Mark Ferguson scored as Darren Holmes and Lee Vigars’ men deservedly secured their fourth win of the Toolstation NCEL Division One campaign.
Midfielder and stand-in captain Craig Tonkinson was man of the match as he dominated the midfield.
Campion, who silenced flag-waving Selby Town supporters on Saturday, were simply not at the races and were well-beaten.
Perhaps the epic victory at Selby and the fact most of their players completing the Three Peaks on Sunday played a part in a jaded display.
The defeat blew the chance of going level on points with leaders Skegness Town. It also allowed Selby, whose supporters will be wearing their club scarfs with pride today after the dramatic win at Retford FC, to move one point behind them with a game-in-hand
Campion were by the favourites as they searched for their tenth consecutive league victory – especially considering Glasshoughton’s leading goal-scorer Nathan Perks was unavailable.
However, Welfare caught the visitors cold after just four minutes and never looked back. A corner from the left and Vamplew, just like his suspended captain Adam Walsh would, leapt like a salmon to head home.
Home goalkeeper Jacob Collier had bits and bats to deal with, but nothing major.
Ryan Hallsworth even missed a sitter which would have given Glasshoughton a solid 2-0 half-time.
The miss did not come to haunt them as it took ten minutes for Glasshoughton to score again. It was perhaps one of the best Glasshoughton team goals of the past decade. Tonkinson’s tricky and ability to hold onto the ball saw him pass to Ferguson on the edge of the penalty area. Ferguson spotted the run of Bell and the winger nipped in and coolly finished.
That finished Campion off and a fine long range free kick from Ferguson, with help off one of the posts, put the visitors out of their misery.
