West Riding Cup scrapped for 20/21

The West Riding County Cup will not be held in 20/21

The West Riding County Cup will not be played during the 2020/21 season.

The West Riding County FA had already said that if the start of the new campaign was delayed until at least September, the competition would not be held.

The County FA has now delivered on its promise.

The announcement comes nearly 24 hours after the North West Counties changed course towards a provisional start date in October.

That decision was taken in a large way because of the lockdown restrictions placed on Greater Manchester and Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees.

The North West Counties’ decision to grab the bulls by its horn without the FA taking the lead will ramp the pressure up on the NCEL to follow suit.

There is still widespread support for a September date, but the numbers against it appear to be growing.

Although current restrictions on things such as crowds and changing rooms could easily change at moment’s notice, many feel September is too early.

Several clubs have openly said they cannot operate without spectators because of the financial implications.

On that front, the current hope is the Government’s pilot large gatherings at various sporting events are held in mid-August are a success and restrictions are lifted.
