Shelley bite back to hold Penistone to 1-1 draw

Off the leash: Kingsley Wetherald, who once scored a double hat-trick hero for Selby Town, hit the equaliser for Shelley in the 1-1 draw with Penistone Church

Ex-Pontefract Collieries dream-maker Kingsley Wetherald escaped Penistone Church’s leashes as he hit the equaliser for Shelley who were able to bite back in the 1-1 stalemate.

Wetherald, who once scored a double hat-trick for Selby Town and is remembered at Ponte for bringing his little dog to matches, struck home the rebound from a penalty with 20 minutes to go.

Shelley were battered 6-0 by local rivals Emley on Saturday so the result against one of the leading sides in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division was a great success. This was by no means a stroll in the park for Penistone.

However, they did race ahead in the 14th minute with danger man Sam Scrivens blasting home from distance.

Despite several chances, Penistone were unable to extend their lead and after a handball, Ash Berry’s Shelley were able to equalise.

There were three other games taking place across the region.

A Goole AFC X1 won 3-2 at West Yorkshire League Premier Division side Robin Hood.

Parkgate drew 1-1 at Ecclesfield Red Rose, while Worsbrough Bridge celebrated a 1-0 victory at Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Division One outfit South Kirkby Colliery.
