Jagger at double as Brighouse edge see-saw friendly

Joe Jagger scored twice in Brighouse Town’s 3-2 win over Scarborough Athletic

Javelle Clarke’s 77th minute chipped finish landed the knockout blow in the 3-2 win for Brighouse Town against Scarborough Athletic.

Matches between these two sides always seem to live up to expectations and this one certainly did.

Brighouse threw the opening two punches in the friendly with Joe Jagger delivering both blows.

The first was from his free kick finding one of the bottom corners. The former Harrogate Railway frontman smashed home at the back-post from Eli Hey’s perfect cross for the second.

Scarborough started clawing their way back into it inside first half stoppage time. Piteu Crouz won a penalty and converted it himself. Seadogs boss Darren Kelly made several changes at half-time, local lad and ex-Brighouse striker Nathan Cartman being one player who came on.

The visitors began to exert pressure and the chances had been flowing by the 70 minutes when deadly striker Cartman equalised.

Ultimately Brighouse had the last word.

Dan Thirkell’s dramatic last minute penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for Knaresbrough Town against North Ferriby, who themselves scored through a penalty converted by Dan East.

Armthorpe Welfare and Staveley Miners Welfare battled out a 2-2 draw, but the friendly was overshadowed by an injury to Armthorpe player Adam Baskerville nine minutes from time which saw the game ended prematurely while an ambulance was called.

Baskerville was diagnosed with a badly sprained neck and has been discharged from hospital.

Despite having the better of the exchanges and chances Armthorpe went behind on 25 minutes through an Aaron Moxam strike. A terrific angled drive from ex-Staveley man Conner Williamson on 33 minutes levelled the scores.

Armthorpe continued to enjoy more of the play, but again went behind to a Jon Froggatt goal on 54 minutes. Luke Williams equalised on 64 minutes, following up after a Chris Simpkins free-kick had been saved by Myles Wright.

Selby Town and Hall Road Rangers enjoyed big victories in their respective friendlies.

Leon Sewell’s Hall romped to a 6-0 smashing of Keelby United. William Broadley, Alex Britton, Luke Bullement, Adam Parker, Moyo Ajibade and Chris Murray scored.

Josh Street and Liam Flanagan both hit hat-tricks in Selby Town’s 7-1 battering of village side Thorpe United, who had ex-Robins favourites Will Ramsay and Steve Lyon playing for them. Ex-Pickering Town attacker Ryan Cooper was Selby’s other goal-scorer.

Goals from Nathan Perks and Soni Fergus were the difference as Pickering Town overcame Nostell Miners Welfare, who were given hope of claiming a draw through Lewis Stephens.

Nostell’s goalkeeper Lee Kelsey also saved a late Wayne Brooksby penalty.

Shelley drew 2-2 with Carlton Athletic.

Silsden put in a decent account in the 2-1 reverse to National North Bradford (Park Avenue). Shaun Airey was Silsden’s goal-scorer.

Goole AFC won 4-1 at Hall Green United, while Stocksbridge Park Steels were 5-1 winners against Athersley Rec. Rossington Main were eight minutes away from beating Sheffield FC until the world’s oldest club scored twice to draw 3-3.
