Golcar win, while Greaves injury time double downs Steeton

North West Counties Division One North Round-Up

Former Emley goalkeeper Adam Lawlor was Golcar’s man of the match

Golcar United are off to a flyer after winning 2-1 at Cleator Moor Celtic.

The win in Cumbria was the perfect start to the season for Ash and Gavin Connor’s side.

Ex-Emley forward Alex Hallam got Golcar’s campaign up and running with a seventh minute goal.

A Tom Mahone penalty levelled proceedings up, but Mike Fish’s strike close to half-time turned out to be winner.

Credit goes to Golcar goalkeeper Adam Lawlor who was their man of the match.

Perhaps there was level of predictably of Steeton’s trip to Bury AFC once as Tom Greaves signed for the newly-formed club last week.

Greaves, a Bradford (Park Avenue) legend because of his last minute of extra-time winner against FC United of Manchester in the 2012 NPL Premier Division play-off final, scored twice in injury-time to somehow earn Bury a 3-2 victory over Steeton.

Roy Mason’s Steeton had heroically put themselves into a winning position with eight minutes to go. Ben Wignall had cancelled out Tony Whitehead’s opener for Bury. Substitute Andy Briggs then put Steeton ahead.

A dream victory was on the cards until Greaves converted a penalty to equalise. As the game ticked into the 95th minute, Greaves scored from a corner to break Steeton hearts.
