Nostell Miners Welfare 1-3 Skegness Town
Ian Walker’s Nostell Miners Welfare gave away three sloppy goals in the defeat to promotion-chasing Skegness Town at Crofton Community Centre.
Skegness did not have to work for any of their goals. The visitors netted their opener after just nine minutes through Jason Field’s header from a corner which Nostell defended poorly.
The goal was the only negative of a first half that saw Nostell more than matched their visitors. Star man Amir Berchill lobbed and beat Skegness’ goalkeeper shortly after and was only denied by the crossbar. Nathan Hawkhead also went close with a header.
Their efforts for the opening stanza were rewarded two minutes into the second half when Berchill raced through. His first shot was saved, but he picked up the ‘leftovers’ and fired home, despite a defender covering the goal-line.
The equaliser should have been the spark plug which potentially pushed Nostell on to cause an upset.
However, it went the other way and the vibrancy that Nostell can plough forward with was simply not there. Certainly losing Joe Wood just after the goal was a major reason.
Cenk Acar was given far too much time and space to score Skegness’ second and Gary King’s game sealer came after goalkeeper Chris Carter got caught in no man’s land.
Skegness almost made the score-line more resounding late-on when they won a very debatable penalty. However, Leon Mettam’s effort was saved by Carter.
