We’ve brought back the Player Profile series which was a popular feature during the 2016/17 season and next up is star Barton Town striker Scott Phillips.

Name

Scott Phillips

Age

32

Current Club

Barton Town

Previous Clubs

Scarborough Athletic, Bridlington Town, Hall Road Rangers, Chalk Lane, North Ferriby United

Day Job

Sales Executive

Best mate in Football

Too many to mention

Biggest Influence

Biggest influence has to be the old man (Darren, one of Ferriby’s 1997 FA Vase heroes). I grow up watching him play and I wanted to do the same. Biggest influence from watching pro football would be Steven Gerrard.

Career Highlight

Career highlight as a team would have to be with Scarborough Athletic giving me the opportunity to begin my semi-pro career. Winning the league and lots of awards with them. As an individual it would have to be with Barton and winning the golden boot in the NCEL Prem.

Lowest Moment in Football

Being sacked by Scarborough Athletic. Made a stupid decision and paid the price. Lucky enough I re-signed with the club a little while after this and ended up playing some of my best football for the club after this. Another low was tearing my Achilles for Barton – 18 months on the sideline. I came back after that and signed for Hall Road. It didn’t really work out how I thought it would and I probably wasn’t the same player if I’m being honest. I fell out of love with the game after that.

Most Memorable Match

Scoring five in the FA Cup vs Abbey Hey for Barton Town. It was the second game of the season and my first start. It was one of those games that everything came off. Everything I hit just hit the back of the net!

Funniest Moment in Football

Funniest moment was always playing against old mates. You’d have words when you were close up. Some of the banter was terrible but hilarious.

First semi-professional manager

Former North Ferriby and Scarborough manager Brian France

Scarborough Athletic & Brian France – he gave me my first chance and I’ll always have a soft spot for the man.

Non League Debut

Non-League competitive debut was for Scarborough Athletic and it was a  hammering by Barton Town 6-2. I started on the bench but came on and scored a penalty.

First Red Card

I think it was against Worsborough Bridge. Stupid because we was six up. Three footed tackle! Shocker!

First Goal

First goal was a penalty at Queensgate for Scarborough against Barton Town.

What do you want to achieve in football in the future

Scott Phillips returned to Non League football with North Ferriby in the summer, but has since joined Barton

I hope to help Barton Town achieve promotion from the NCEL. It’s a club that’s very close to me with some amazing people associated. The club has the foundations to fly up the leagues.

Favourite Non League Ground I’ve played at (barring your own club)

FC United of Manchester / AFC Telford
