Lee Garside’s early goal handed Athersley Rec their first victory of the season as Shane Kelsey’s men stunned Hemsworth Miners Welfare in the solitary goal derby win.
Athersley proved handy on the break against leaders Yorkshire Amateur and that theme continued against Luke Danville and Luke Potter’s Hemsworth.
The Rec countered in fifth minute and after Wells goalkeeper Brett Souter had saved the initial shot, Garside pounced on the rebound to score.
Understandably, Athersley rode their luck. Hemsworth twice had a goal disallowed in the second half.
But it was in the last 20 minutes where lady luck was really smiling on them.
Ex-Rec midfielder Ben Walker headed against the crossbar as the Wells searched the equaliser.
A Hemsworth free kick soon after then incredibly hit both posts.
To round off things, Walker struck the crossbar again in stoppage time.
Not that Athersley will care – their precious three points take them to a point behind second bottom Bottesford Town.
