Steeton’s competitive debut at the brand new Marley Stadium went totally to plan as Roy Mason’s men gave their supporters a Christmas treat by impressively dispatching local rivals Nelson.

The long-awaited move to Marley – Steeton’s first home league game since February – did not receive the fanfare it deserves because of covid-restrictions but Mason’s side ensured the game will not be forgotten.

The success is the Keighley-based club’s second consecutive 3-0 win and it lifts them above Golcar United in the table and into seventh place.

Similar to last time out at Pilkington, Steeton laid their marker down in the first half and sealed the points with two late goals.

Ben Wignall secured his place in the history books as his half-hour mark goal – from close range from Kayle Price’s cross – broke the deadlock. Prior to that Steeton had been under the cosh.

The second goal was quite special as Toby Jeffrey literally came off the bench in the 83rd minute and within 60 seconds had bent the ball into the bottom corner with his first touch.

That effectively sealed it – despite Nelson’s kitchen sink efforts – and Jake Townsend truly finished the job with a 25-yard beauty in the final minute.
