Former Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday defender Mark Smith has joined Wayne Benn’s coaching staff at Ossett United.
During a 17-year career between 1977 and 1994, Smith also played for Plymouth Argyle and Chesterfield on a permanent basis.
After retiring he entered the coaching world and served the likes of Chesterfield, Wednesday, Lincoln City and Notts County in various roles. One of his most successful periods was as academy director at Barnsley between 1998 and 2003 where he enjoyed acclaim after a long FA Youth Cup run.
Smith will combine his Ossett role with his position as loans manager at Sheffield United.
Benn told Ossett’s website: “Bringing in someone like Mark will set the tone from the very beginning of our new campaign.
“The returning lads will be joining up with some new faces and Mark will be working to make sure a solid team bond is forged immediately. He has some great ideas and his CV speaks for itself.”
