S&HCSL League Cup Round-Up
Former Shaw Lane and Athersley Rec star Lee Bennett took full advantage of a gift to earn ten man Wombwell Town a deserved point in the GROUP A 1-1 stale-mate at Dodworth Miners Welfare.
For the second week running though, Karl Rose’s Wombwell’s start was disastrous as Premier Division giants Dodworth went ahead inside four minutes thanks to Sam Severn.
Wombwell responded well and equalised close to half-time. Bennett, one of the many top Non League players to come from Barnsley in recent years and the man who scored Shaw Lane’s goal in the 2017 FA Cup first round tie with Mansfield Town during the unforgettable Craig Elliott’s years, was presented with one of the easiest goals of his career.
Connor Peace’s header created confusion for the home defence and Bennett nipped to take the ball away from goalkeeper Josh Herring and score into the empty net.
Wombwell’s position was weakened on the hour when Luke Norbury was sent off on the hour for an alleged elbow, but they held on for their precious point.
Oughtilbridge opened their League Cup account at the second attempt with a 1-0 home win over Denaby Main.
Jordan Kershaw netted twice as Terry Simon’s Wombwell Main took command of GROUP D with the narrow 3-2 victory over Penistone Church.
Young striker Ryan Wingrove was Wombwell’s other goal-scorer.
Rob Gorman fired Kiveton Park ahead, but Chris Nelson’s men were beaten 3-1 by South Kirkby.
Rida Hannioui earned Sheffield Town their first point in GROUP C with their goal in the 1-1 draw at Swinton Athletic.
Matt Griffin’s Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 were unable to secure their first win of the League Cup campaign as South Elmsall United fought back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw.
Kenan McKenzie-Gray was Ecclesfield’s two-goal hero while an own goal and a Lynch strike earned a point for ten-man South Elmsall.
Houghton Main’s first throw of the dice in GROUP B saw them finish up with ten men, but draw 2-2 at Handsworth reserves.
Defender James Byford and Jordan Good scored for Houghton who had Jay Good shown two yellow cards.
Patrick Muirhead and Callum Walton were on the score-sheet for Handsworth.
It finished goal-less between North Gawber and Jubilee Sports.
