Fortunate favoured brave Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 in the S&HCSL League Cup quarter-final tie at Wombwell Main as Matt Griffin’s underdogs won 3-2 to reach the semi-finals.
The promised full-frontal assault on Terry Simon’s Wombwell worked to the letter as Red Rose were leading 3-0 after an hour.
Star striker and man of the match Kenan McKenzie Grey scored twice in the first half to stun the home side and put Red Rose in control at half-time.
Young starlet Liam Childes, who is only 18 and has a bright future ahead of him in the Non League game, then scored a deserved goal on the hour mark to seemingly seal Ecclesfield’s passage.
However, it was not plain-sailing as Wombwell hit back with two goals to set up a nail-biting climax for Ecclesfield.
The Main missed two or three great chances to equalise as Ecclesfield held on for dear life.
The final whistle finally went and Ecclesfield were able to celebrate well into the night.
