North Gawber search for new boss as Simms stands down

Dave Simms has stood down as North Gawber manager after five years of unprecedented success

North Gawber are searching for a new manager as treble-winning boss Dave Simms has decided to stand down.

Simms will remain as the club’s vice-chairman and secretary, but will pass the manager’s baton onto a new face.

His assistants John Pickering and Scott Chipchase are also stepping away from the dugout.

Simms will forever be an important part of Gawber’s history as his achievements have been remarkable.

He kept the club afloat after the devastating death of founder and manager Nicholas Bedford in November 2015 before leading Gawber to the unprecedented treble in 2019 when they won the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division, the League Cup and the Sheffield Senior Cup.

“It is no surprise to some people as when we won the treble I said I was stepping down and the lads persuaded me to stay,” Simms told Non League Yorkshire.

“I will be still involved within the club as the first team secretary and vice-chairman and I’ll be there on match-days. I’m not walking away from the club.

“I took over five years ago after Nick’s tragic passing and we’ve achieved more than we ever thought we would.

“My intention when I took over was to get the club back on an even keel after the devastation.

“We’ve gone beyond my expectations and the lads have given me everything.

“Stepping down is something I’ve thought about for a while.

“It is not a decision I have taken lightly, but it is time for new faces to take the club in a new direction and drive it forward to the next level, so to speak.”

Simms’ final game in the dugout was last Friday’s League Cup quarter-final defeat at Dodworth Miners Welfare.

The loss officially brought Gawber’s dominance on the league to a close, but Simms doesn’t see the defeat as an end of an era as he believes there is still more to come from the squad.

“I wouldn’t say (the team needs) rebuilding, that’s probably the wrong term,” he said.

“We just need fresh ideas and a couple of fresh faces.

“People are getting older, but they still have a few years left in their legs.”

  1. Ran the team exactly how Beddy would have…beleived in the lads and let them play for each other…massive team bond like no other which has led them to their brilliant success…honestly beleive no one else could have achieved what Dave has achieved with these lads other than Nicholas himself…total respect has to be earned and Dave should have that from everyone in the game…hes definately earned that…#ripBeddy…❤️
