S&HCSL League Cup Final
Curt Wilkinson’s double was the difference as Swinton Athletic lifted the League Cup thanks to a 3-1 win over young guns Handsworth Reserves on Wednesday night.
Handsworth pushed Swinton – unbeaten in two years in County Senior League football – almost all the way, but it wasn’t to be for the competition’s ultimate dark horses in front of a large crowd at Wombwell Main.
Swinton drew blood in the first half. Wilkinson surged into the 18-yard-box and finished coolly as Handsworth’s goalkeeper approached,
Handsworth fought back in the second half when leading goal-scorer Pat Muirhead headed the Ambers level with a brilliant header from a left-wing cross.
Whilst Handsworth gave everything, Swinton weren’t to be denied.
The final was in the balance until Justin Greenwood netted from close range at the second attempt after the first was saved.
Swinton wrapped the trophy up with scoring his second with a deflected effort from distance.
