Garforth Town 1-2 Nostell Miners Welfare
Danny Edwards closed the door on an injury-hit two years after scoring the last minute winner for Nostell Miners Welfare who staged a late comeback at Garforth Town.
Edwards was mobbed by his team-mates who all understood the significance of the goal and what it meant to the young striker.
He burst on the scene in the early stages of the 2019/20 campaign with several goals, but a bad injury halted his progress.
Now he’s back and he’ll hope this winning goal is just the start of a successful campaign.
The dramatic finish concluded a closely-fought match.
Striker James Burgess showed his well-known electric pace to put Garforth in front after 30 minutes.
Running like a gazelle, Burgess left the Nostell defenders for death after breaking clear from a through ball. The ex-Shaw Lane Aquaforce then simply blasted the ball home.
Brett Smith almost equalised just before the break, but his superb effort came back off the crossbar.
Garforth had several good chances to finish Nostell off in the second half, but Paul Marshall’s men failed to take them.
The wasted opportunities came back to haunt them with five minutes to go.
Lewis Pickering was gifted loads of space inside the penalty area on the left-side and the striker coolly buried the ball in the far bottom corner.
Nostell were now on top and Joe Wood then breezed into the penalty box and had to be denied by Garforth goalkeeper Aaron Burn.
That was only the warning flare as Wood danced into the area and unselfishly laid the ball to Edwards who coolly placed a low shot into the net – sparking scenes of euphoria.
