Eagle backs awarding wins if teams cannot field sides

Handsworth manager Russ Eagle

Russ Eagle supports the idea to award victories to the opposition of sides who cannot field sides for Toolstation NCEL matches this season.

The Handsworth manager backs such a rule – first suggested by Athersley Rec boss Shane Kelsey and North Ferriby chief Chris Bolder – as he feels it is too easy to postpone a fixture.

The forfeit system has worked effectively in Rugby League’s Super League to the point where it has helped put the competition on course to finish its campaign.

No rule has been adopted by the NCEL, but several manager support the proposal.

“I have read (what Shane Kelsey and Chris Bolder said) and thought ‘is it something I need to think about’?,” Eagle told Non League Yorkshire.

“For clubs it is like a bad back. If you want time off and you don’t want to do anything you play that card.

“If you’re playing that card on a Tuesday night then you forfeit, simple as that.

“I do agree with (Kelsey and Bolder) and we as a club we have decided to flow test all first team and reserve players twice a week.

“If there’s anyone testing positive, bang they’re out of the way.

“We want to play football and we’ll try everything to do that.

“It would be ridiculous if we couldn’t field a side as we also have our reserves and under 21s.

“We have always said we are a club and whoever signs for us signs for all. So the first team lads are signed for the County Senior side and the County Senior players are signed for the first team.

“We must have 60 players signed on.

“If it gets to where we can’t field a side it means we have been shut down.

“If I had to field the under 18s I would do.

“Nobody did last year. Games were called off and it was easy to call them off.”
