Jamie Danby, the son of Harrogate Railway cult hero Nigel, was man of the match during his dream debut for his dad’s old club.
18-year-old midfielder Danby starred in the 3-0 beating of Swallownest on the Toolstation NCEL Division One opening day – despite only signing for the club two days ago.
Father Nigel was a key member of the famous 2002 Rail’ side who played Bristol City in the FA Cup second round proper live on Sky Sports.
Talented cricketer Nigel, who was unable to witness his son’s unforgettable Non League bow due to batting and bowling commitments, returned to manage the club for nearly two years until his controversial sacking in 2012.
Harrogate boss Mick O’Connell was delighted with his new starlet’s performance.
“He was unbelievable,” O’Connell told Non League Yorkshire.
“He’s only trained twice after coming for an in-house friendly on Tuesday.
“We had a few trialists playing because we were short of numbers and him and Josh both stood-out.
“We got them both back on Thursday night and we signed them.
“I thought Jamie Danby was excellent today.
“His attitude is impeccable and he’s a really likeable coachable kid.
“He’s got energy, work-rate and he’s tenacious so I’m really pleased to have him on board.”
Jamie played for Whitkirk Wanderers in the West Yorkshire League last season and he used to play for i2i with star Railway youngster Kieran Greenaway.
Jamie turned out once for Garforth Town in pre-season but with the Premier Division probably a bridge too far for this season, Nigel contacted Railway after receiving a recommendation due to the club’s policy of giving young players opportunities.
