Dodworth is the place to be on Friday night as the annual #ItsOkToTalk mouth-watering contest between Dodworth Miners Welfare and Wombwell Main is taking place (kick-off 6.30pm).
A big crowd is expected as two of Barnsley’s top Step 7 sides are battle it out for the shield which Dodworth won last year and to also raise money for the Samaritans and Barnsley-based community group Project 14.
The fundraising is led by Wombwell secretary Warren Bird who created the hashtag #ItsOkToTalk several years ago.
The hashtag was created to encourage men to speak up about their mental health problems.
“I did a speech at Dodworth last year and Daz came up to me and suggested we do an annual match between Dodworth and Wombwell to raise money and awareness,” Mr Bird told Non League Yorkshire.
“So the first game was at Wombwell last year and now we’re holding the second one at Dodworth tomorrow night.
“Because of the pandemic we couldn’t really publicise the game last year because there were a lot of things we couldn’t do like having crowds.
“This year everyone will be going in the bar afterwards and hopefully we’ll raise more money this year.
“I’ve raised £12,000 since I started #ItsOKToTalk and it has come a long way.”
Collection buckets will be placed around the ground to enable spectators to donate.
Project 14 was launched in April 2018, by Beth Deakin and Thomas Armitage following the death of their best friend Ashley Salkeld.
Mr Salkeld played rugby for Barnsley Rugby Union Club and wore the number 14 jersey.
