No need for Campion to press the panic button – Ashforth

North West Counties League Division One North

Campion joint manager Lee Ashforth

Lee Ashforth says there is no need for Campion to press the panic button after a tough start to life in the North West Counties League.

Campion have lost their opening two league games ahead of the mouth-watering battle at giants and title favourites Bury AFC on Sunday afternoon.

But Ashforth is adamant Campion will soon go on an upward trajectory.

“Is it ‘eck (time to press the panic button),” Ashforth told Non League Yorkshire.

“We have got to finish top five to get into the play-offs, we know that.

“I put on social media last week that you don’t get promoted or relegated in the first couple of weeks of the season.

“Things change and you go back to 2019 we lost the first three or four games and we then went on a run of nine on the trot.

“We’ll be fine and I’m sure we’ll do well in the league.

“It would be nice to pick up a league win sooner rather than later but we’ll see what happens.”

Campion expected a difficult opening bat in the North West having been moved fairly late and the fact a number of players left in the early stages of pre-season.

“We knew how hard it was going to be to move across and that it would be a learning curve with a completely new team,” Ashforth said.

“It has proven that way.

“It was always going to be tough.

“We started the Garstang game and there were only four players who started that game who were with us last season.

“We have been narrowly beaten in the first two league games and won fairly comfortably in the FA Cup against a team from the league above.

“We’re not million miles away.

“Are we where we want to be? No we’re not.

“We know we need a couple more players in key areas and players back from injuries and we need to get some points on the board.

“We are starting to get it together.

“It is a matter of us finding our feet and it won’t come any harder than Bury because everyone knows they are the favourites and they have started well.

“We’re massively looking forward to it.

“You have to test yourselves against the teams who are going to up there.

“Golcar are definitely going to be up there and they were a good side.

“Garstang were good (on the opening day).

“Bury will be a decent team for us to play and it is an opportunity to play in front of a decent crowd so it will be interesting to see how we do.”
