FA Cup specialist Whitfield earns Maltby a replay

FA Cup Preliminary Round Round-Up (1)

Maltby Main hero Brandon Whitfield scoring on his Stocksbridge Park Steels debut in the FA Cup two years ago

FA Cup super-sub specialist Brandon Whitfield earned Maltby Main another bite of the cherry against higher league Carlton Town after the scoring the late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Muglet Lane..

Substitute Whitfield’s 80th minute strike levelled the scores and forced a replay.

The precious goal came nearly two years to the day since he scored for Stocksbridge Park Steels as a 17-year-old debutant in their FA Cup tie with Irlam Town.

Maltby gave as good as they got and deserved a replay.

The first half finished goal-less but contained drama as Carlton were awarded a penalty which was fired wide by Aaron Opuku.

Louis Axcell’s men then went up the other end and rattled the crossbar through Connor Cutts.

Johnathan Williams then did the same thing with a rocket that hit the underside of the bar and bounced out.

But the first half’s hard work was undone two minutes after the interval as Tyler Blake capitalised on poor defending to put Carlton ahead.

Maltby refused to give in and the chances were building before the equaliser as Jonathan Hill hit the crossbar.

The replay is at Carlton on Tuesday night.

Eccleshill United claimed a replay against Charnock Richard.

Lee Elam’s side drew 1-1 as Luke Aldrich scored a late equaliser.

Emley lost 2-0 at City of Liverpool.
