Hemsworth Miners Welfare 0-5 Garforth Town
Garforth Town climbed to second place in the table after sauntering to a five-star victory at winless Hemsworth Miners Welfare who literally hit rock bottom.
Karl Fitzgerald, Alex Burton, Dan Coupland, Joe Colley and Hass Gorji scored as Hemsworth offered little resistance.
Shane Kelsey said on Monday that his new players on paper were capable of pulling the Wells out of trouble.
Tuesday’s draw with Goole AFC reaffirmed that view.
But now he will be reassessing that comment after the club reached its lowest point in years.
It may be only September but nine games without a win is setting Hemsworth up for a long and hard campaign.
This terrible performance and heavy defeat has to act as the line in the sand moment if the situation is going to be turned around.
Once a very hostile environment for visiting teams, the atmosphere last night was subdued to say the least and a million miles away from the days when Kelsey was helping Wayne Benn’s young charges win the Division One title.
In those days they were hard to beat, exciting going forward, with a never-say-die attitude to boot.
Garforth may not have the star names, but they have all three of those characteristics.
Apart from a Layton Swaine effort, Hemsworth, who lost captain Harry Viggars in the warm-up, created little.
Garforth had gone close two-or-three times prior to Fitzgerald bending a shot into the bottom corner.
The contest felt over on the half-hour mark when Garforth doubled their lead.
Hemsworth were undone by the long ball and Burton hit the jackpot with a volley from outside the penalty area.
It was game over by the 56th minute.
The pressure had been building and Burton, who had missed a sitter 60 seconds earlier, laid off captain Coupland who was presented with an unmissable chance.
With Hemsworth heads dropped, Garforth looked capable of scoring every-time they surged forward.
Substitute Colley found the net with a fine finish from 20 yards to add the fourth.
The fifth was inevitable and that arrived through great play from former Hemsworth star Sam Leach and Colley down the right.
Colley crossed and the unmarked Hass nodded home to round off Garforth’s great night and complete Hemsworth’s misery.
