FA Cup second qualifying round
Craig Rouse’s Pontefract Collieries created history after winning 3-2 at Squires Gate to reach the FA Cup third qualifying round for the first time in the club’s history.
The Colls are two wins away from the prestigious first round and they meet the likes of York City, Guiseley and local lad and ex-reserve team boss Craig Elliott’s Boston United in the third qualifying round – which is drawn on Monday at 1pm.
The afternoon did not exactly start as planned as Squires set themselves up to cause a potential upset with the tenth minute opener.
However, the goal was quickly cancelled out.
Vaughan Redford made the driving run and he picked out Gavin Rothery whose cross was converted by Scott Smith.
History began to beckon on the stroke of half-time.
Eli Hey pounced on Jack Greenhough’s deflected cross and the Colls were ahead.
The tie remained in the balance until former Goole AFC captain Derry Robson got the third with just eight minutes to go.
Squires did pull one back in the 90th minute but that was too late for the Colls to be denied.
