EV2 Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Round-Up
Premier Division
Unbeaten Penistone Church Reserves were massive party poopers as Scott Briggs’ side won 1-0 at Wakefield AFC in front of over 500 people on Friday night.
Everything went right with Wakey’s #Challenge500 promotion as the target was achieved and the teams delivered a fabulous advert for the County Senior League and Wakefield.
But they didn’t get the result they wanted for their large fan-base.
Penistone were never going to roll over.
Church had won their previous four league fixtures and with some ex-NCEL players in their squad, they were always more than capable of pulling off a result.
A first half own goal was the difference for Church whose key man Jack Moore had a penalty saved as well.
Wakefield, who gave ex-Pontefract Collieries and Hallam forward Jordan Turner his debut, have won two from four league games so far this season.
Super-sub Jack Owen was the hero as ten man Dodworth Miners Welfare returned to winning ways with the late 1-0 defeat of Sheffield Town at home.
Owen hit the winner with ten minutes to go.
The victory was quite something as Darren Young’s men had to play with ten minutes for 70 minutes as full-back Ben Severn was sent off following a wild challenge.
Ryan Wingrove’s hat-trick in the 4-0 defeat of Hepworth United propelled Wombwell Main up to fifth.
Terry Simon’s side have now won three on the spin.
Substitute Jordan Kershaw also netted for Wombwell.
Surprise package Oughtibridge won again after defeating Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 2-1.
Carlton Carty found the back of the net for Ecclesfield.
Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves and Houghton Main was postponed.
