Worsbrough Bridge 2-3 Nostell Miners Welfare
Liam Ormsby was on the score-sheet as Nostell Miners Welfare ended a league winless run by holding onto their slender lead in the Friday night battle at Worsbrough Bridge.
Nostell manager Ian Walker made the sacrifice of their tactical plan by adopting a pure and simple game-plan and it proved effective as his men claimed the three points, denying Worsbrough a fourth successive victory.
Walker also had to thank man of the match goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson who made an extraordinary save to deny Mike Jepps in the second half.
The match lived up to its billing from Bridge boss Luke Forgione who predicted plenty of goals.
Two hundred and fifty two came down and the players, many who had just finished nine to five jobs, worked their socks off from the word go.
A well-worked move delivered Nostell’s 13th minute opener.
Nathan Perks’ through ball laid the goal on a plate for Ormsby who shot low and hard past Ross Pritchard from just inside the penalty area.
Worsbrough responded quickly and Mike Jepps headed home a free kick to equalise.
Blue smoke then started appearing as both sides now began to become involved in the odd fractious.
Fortunately nothing escalated to a red card.
Poor defensive positioning for a free kick allowed Anees Younis to place a free kick into the bottom corner – restoring Nostell’s lead before half-time.
Nostell seemingly wrapped up their win straight after the interval.
Younis sent the ball into the box from the left-wing and it appeared go straight in but Ormsby was credited with turning it home past a stranded Pritchard.
Younis smashed the crossbar with a free kick and Perks’ rebound header was ruled for offside as Nostell searched for the killer fourth.
They didn’t get it and Worsbrough slowly came alive.
Allinson was sensational for Nostell – making the save of century to deny Jepps’ header.
Both managers described the stop as “Gordon Banks-esque”.
He made at least two more saves as the home side threw caution to the wind.
When Alex Hutchinson was brought down and captain Conor Glavin converted the penalty, it set up a nervy finale for Nostell.
Even Pritchard was up for a late corner and even displayed a candidacy for becoming an outfield player with great play in Nostell’s half as Worsbrough desperately searched for the equaliser.
Ultimately, Nostell held their breath.
