Ian Walker cited a new game-plan as the catalyst behind Nostell Miners Welfare’s 3-2 victory at Worsbrough Bridge on Friday night.
Nostell are well-known for their entertaining passing style of play but Walker and his coaching staff moved away from those principles.
“I think both myself and Luke would walk away from that and say ‘what an awful game of football for two UEFA Licence coaches’,” Walker told Non League Yorkshire.
“But from a spectator point of view this is November to February Northern Counties East League football.
“We didn’t play it out once.
“We didn’t play expansive football and what we tried to play is what I call ‘winning NCEL football away from home’.
“That’s what we have done.
“We came up with something different which we think it has worked.”
Walker also lavished praise on goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson who was the man of the match after several match-winning saves.
His save from Mike Jepps’ goal-bound header was the pick of the bunch.
“He was outstanding and that’s his first game back for four or five games,” Walker said.
“I think he made three really outstanding saves and four or five where he has looked so commanding.
“There was one he pulled out of the bottom corner in a way that it was like watching Gordon Banks.”
