New North Gawber manager Scott Chipchase has set his sights on a top four finish.

Barnsley-based Gawber are reborn after a difficult start to the season as the bulk of the 2019 unprecedented treble-winning squad have returned.

“We spoke about this with Dave (Simms) and hopefully we can push in the League Cup and get as far as we can in that,” Chipchase told Non League Yorkshire.

“Our aim in the league is potentially top four.

“We’re more than capable now the team is back to what it was a couple of years ago.

“You can see that on our team-sheets with the names that are there.

“A good run of three wins and you’re well back up there.”

Scott Chipchase says North Gawber forward Carey Welford is a great clubman

Chipchase, who is only 27, is the head honcho of a three-man management team containing treble-winning boss Dave Simms and coach John Pickering.

They replaced Ian Shillito who resigned for personal reasons after four league games.

Gawber then needed the 30 days grace to resolve a few things and Chipchase says the club were unfortunate as players struggled to commit to the opening few weeks of the campaign.

“Doing it this way allowed Dave to concentrate on a few things in terms of running the club so it made sense (for me to be the manager),” he said.

“We have a lot of good lads behind scenes like good clubmen like Carey Welford and Jake Bedford so we would have never have folded.

“This way allowed us all to be together going in a good direction.

“(At the beginning of the season) people were on holiday, people had work commitments, people were ill and we were very unlucky with injuries.

“It was a very unlucky time for us unfortunately.

“There’s no transition period, it is straight back in.

“All the lads are back signed and hopefully this week there’ll be a couple more signings.

“We’re looking to hit the ground running now and Saturday away at Stocksbridge is a game we see as winnable.”

Chipchase won his first game at the helm – the 3-1 defeat of High Green Villa before Saturday’s bizarre 3-3 stalemate with local rivals Wombwell Main.

Gawber had been winning 3-0 with ten minutes remaining.

“We started well and we had a good squad out,” he said.

“But it wasn’t a game where we were on top.

“We got our second goal against the run of play and in the last five minutes we switched off and we made a few mistakes and Wombwell got themselves back into it.

“It happens but hopefully it will be last time it happens to us.”
