Karl Rose says promotion-chasing Wombwell Town are not at full power just yet.
Wombwell have begun the season well and occupy second place – although last week’s defeat to runaway leaders South Kirkby Colliery means they are five points adrift of top spot.
“We got the draw in the first game of the season and I think like everyone else it was a false start,” former Frickley Athletic manager Rose told Non League Yorkshire.
“We were probably a couple of weeks undercooked but we got a good draw at Kiveton who are doing alright and then we have strung a good run of results together.
“We have won some tough games to give us an ideal start.
“Unfortunately that came to an end on Saturday with Kirkby beating us.
“But at the start of the season we would have taken five wins, a draw and a loss so we are not too far from where we want to be.
“I suppose this is where the hard work starts and we have to get back to winning ways as soon as possible to close the gap on Kirkby.
“It has been a good start but I’d like to think there is more to come from us.”
Wombwell have entered this season with a few changes to their squad.
Former Swinton Athletic and North Gawber forward Matty Thornton was their marquee summer signing.
Rose also signed Denaby quartet Brodie Cooper, Jordan Cooper, Declan Cocking and James Copley.
“It has been similar to every other club in the sense it has been difficult to get the commitment due the disruption in life and other stuff that has taken priority over football with trips away and time with the family,” Rose said.
“I don’t think anyone has had the same commitment (as before the pandemic).
“We have built a brand new side but if I’m honest this is the best side we have put together.
“It takes time to gel and we haven’t had our best side out on the pitch.
“We’re still missing Lee Bennett and Matty Thornton has only played one game for us.
“The lads who came from Denaby are just starting to get fit so I’m hoping the more we get on the pitch and the training session we’ll start clicking and we’ll see improvements.”
But whilst Wombwell are regarded as one of the favourites for the title, Rose is keen to point out the stiff competition.
“I’m confident in the lads’ ability and with what we have put together,” he said.
“I want to go and win the league and win every single match but I’m not daft.
“There’s a lot of hard work to come.
“Kirkby have started like a house on fire.
“You have got Handsworth who have been outstanding over the last couple of seasons.
“Denaby are always a tough side to go and play.
“Caribbean are getting a run together.
“Kiveton are usually in and around it so you can’t take anything for granted.
“But come the end of the season I’m certain we’ll be up be there and competing.”
