Nathan Keightley’s double helped ensure in-form Penistone Church survived a fright at Athersley Rec to record a fifth league win in six and move up to the lofty heights of sixth.

Jimmy Whitehead’s Athersley, who were chasing a double over Church having beaten them back in September, took a 15th minute through Muhamet Gashi to stun their visitors.

The Church response was strong as Steve Lenthall’s men hit the post twice.

The pressure eventually told and Brett Lovell scored from close range.

Striker Keightley then curled home two quick-fire free kicks to put Church in command at half-time.

The contest was over by the hour.

Great play from Brad Kemp enabled Jordan Coduri to score the fourth.

Athersley pulled one back thanks to Jonathan Nyanton in the last five minutes – too late to mount a comeback.

Just over 250 people attended the Barnsley derby.
