Flashback…On This Week in…

With the midweek schedule decimated, it seems an opportune moment to look back at a few moments from years gone by.

Looking back at a few matches taking place between 4th December and 11th December in the past 12 years, there’s been plenty of memorable moments.

2009

Leeds Carnegie 9-0 Rossington Main (NCEL Division One)

Brighton manager Graham Potter is busy plotting to bring down Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur this week.

Back in 2009 he mastered the downfall of Ian Wilson’s Rossington Main in a 9-0 win for his title-chasing Leeds Carnegie.

Current Eccleshill United midfielder Andy Cooper scored twice along with Kyle Ross and Alex Smith.

Marco Marchetta, Chib Chilaka and Chris Thackray also netted.

2010

Formby 2-3 Tadcaster Albion (FA Vase)

Paul Marshall was manager of Tadcaster for seven years until his departure in May 2015

Graeme Whitehead was the hero for Tadcaster Albion who came from behind to win the second round tie with five minutes to go.

Steven Jeff and Stuart Rice were Paul Marshall’s other goal-scorers.

2013

Boston United manager Craig Elliott did a brilliant job at Ossett Town between 2012 and 2014

It was a productive week for Craig Elliott and Ossett Town with two memorable victories.

Ossett won 3-1 at Darlington in the League Cup despite striker Chris Wood being in goal.

A 16-year-old super-sub in Nathan Keightley burst onto the Non League scene with the 97th minute equaliser in Glasshoughton Welfare’s 3-3 draw with Yorkshire Amateur.

Simon Houghton and Craig Wilkinson’s first game in charge of Glasshoughton was certainly eventful as they enjoyed a dream start thanks to Jamie Williams and Alex Romaniw.

But in a crazy five minutes before the hour mark, Ammers seized control through Harrison Blakey, Jasiah Donaldson and Thomas Rose.

Striker Ash Scothern was also sent off for Glasshoughton who fielded several debutants who all became popular figures at Leeds Road including Mike Brearley, Connor Rollinson and Gaz Hunter.

Showman Ryan Poskitt’s debut was delayed as Worsbrough Bridge were still clinging onto his registration.

Glasshoughton joint manager Wilkinson was quite happy at the end, he said “We left it a bit late. Me and Simon looked at each other and thought the chance had gone.

“You can’t fault the effort from the lads. They stuck the game-plan and I’ll buy them all a drink.”

Down the road at Athersley Rec, the Barnsley-based side dramatically picked up a crucial 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Pontefract Collieries.

A defeat was on the cards due to Aaron Moxam’s goal but Ryan Pleasants and match-winner Joe Thornton scored late-on for the Rec.

Stocksbridge Park Steels sailed into the FA Trophy First Round for the second year running after the shock 3-2 win at National North outfit Stalybridge Celtic in the replay.

Carey Welford hit the dramatic winner as North Gawber won 3-2 after extra-time at Hallam in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup third round tie.

Mark West and Chris Wood had put Hallam in front on two occasions but Gawber staged a remarkable win thanks to Welford (2) and Lewis Elsworth.

Former Nostell defender Dan Collins

Dan Collins ensured a magical start for new Nostell Miners Welfare joint managers Jason Dodsworth and Simon Houghton as he headed the late winner for them against Retford United.

Nostell recovered from going a goal down in the first half to deservedly win 2-1 against a Retford side who lost the plot.

The turning point came when Retford goalkeeper James Gamble handled outside the area and was sent off.

Nostell equalised when Jack Owen buried Liam Radford’s corner.

Radford was again involved for the 86th minute winner as he crossed for Collins who rose like a salmon to head home to hand the new managers their fairytale opening chapter.
