Player Profile – Chris Salt

Craig Denton’s Hallam attack gets all the credit so we’re shining a light on one of the defenders who are a key part of their success so far this season.

Best mate in football

Can’t really say I’ve got one best mate in football to be honest

Team you support

Sheffield United

Football Idol

Biggest influence on football career

My dad, trained me from a very young age and got me into it.

Career Highlight

Reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup for Stamford and playing away against Hartlepool.

Most Memorable Game

Beating Wrexham away with Stamford in the replay of the FA Cup, to qualify for the first round proper. Won 3-2 in extra time. From being 2-0 up with 10 mins to play and going 2-2 then winning 3-2 in extra time. Never had such change in emotions.

Lowest moment in football

Has to be snapping my ACL, was at a really good place in my career playing at my best and suddenly getting such a bad injury really did hurt me.

Biggest regret in football

Has to be going to Ayi Napa after being released from Sheffield United whilst I was on trial at Barnsley and just coming back so unprepared and unfit, cost me a professional contract at Barnsley.

Funniest moment in football

Can’t really think of one off the top of my head but I’ve had a lot of laughs throughout my career

First semi-professional manager

Mark Shaw, when I was at Worksop town, didn’t know much about non league just coming out of my scholar days, got me to come to grips with leave academy football and playing in the non league game.

Non League Debut

Played against FC United at home for Worksop Town, there was around two thousand fans there. Had all the away fans heckling me was a nice welcome to non league, even better we won 2-0.

First Red Card in Non League

Not sure if it was my first but was my most annoying one, got a straight red card for winning a header and even worse he gave a penalty. Never been so annoyed.

First and Best Non League Goal

My first was against Sheffield Wednesday for Worksop in a pre season game, didn’t count as wasn’t a league or cup game but that was my first ever non league goal. I’d say one of my best was when I was playing for Gainsborough Trinity, last game of the season we was playing against FC United away and I scored to put us 1-0 up. Was in front of 5k fans and that season was massive for us.

What do you want to achieve in football in the future?

You always want to play as high as possible, it’s about enjoyment. Hopefully keep playing until my body won’t let me but I’ve always wanted to get into management when the time to hang the boots up comes.

Favourite Non League Ground

Honestly can’t really say I’ve got one, but I’ve played at a lot of good ones.

  1. I noticed Chris a few years ago when he joined Hallam, and I thought his display on what was probably his debut was outstanding! Maintained a high level of consistency since, probably the best defender I have seen at this level.
