Nostell Miners Welfare 1-3 Brigg Town
Nostell Miners Welfare striker Joe Wood scored after just NINE SECONDS in their defeat to free scoring title-chasing Brigg Town.
It was an incredible start considering Brigg claimed the NCEL record score last week with their 14-1 annihilation of Teversal.
Walker quipped in his post match interview, “I was thinking of playing a back 15”, when asked what he thought going into the fixture.
Yet his men managed to stake their claim on their own potential record with one of the quickest goal in NCEL history.
Wood capitalised on poor defending and scored at the second attempt after Brigg goalkeeper David Birch saved his initial shot.
It was one of those ‘am I dreaming moments’.
But the lead did not last long.
Brigg looked capable of scoring every time they ventured forward with former Non League Yorkshire favourites Scott Phillips and Josh Batty two of the many driving Brigg forward.
Barton Town legend Phillips equalised from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Chris Barrow committed a foul in 11th minute.
Just over 60 seconds later Brigg were ahead as Wayne Graves found space on the left and found the net.
Brigg had multiple chances to extend their lead but Barrow was in excellent form.
Although it must be it wasn’t one way traffic as Nostell caused the odd moment of danger.
The killer third goal came at the beginning of the second half when Thomas Johnston blasted home from a corner.
What They Said
Nostell Miners Welfare manager Ian Walker
“(Brigg) are a good side, an accomplished side and a top three side.
“If you take the ‘keeper out of it, our average age today was 21-years-old and I thought the big difference how accomplished (Brigg) looked as an adult NCEL team.
“We looked like a team who are developing to kick on again.
“(Brigg) were very good but I thought in spells I was really pleased (with my side0.
“I was pleased that we tried to get on the ball and be brave with it.
“We could have quite easily pinched a goal and made it 2-2.
“We went in 2-1 at half-time and you’re looking at talking about ‘don’t give goals away’ and we have conceded from a corner which is really disappointing.”
