Selby Town 5-0 Worsbrough Bridge
Deadly duo Liam Flanagan and Harry Clapham were too hot for Worsbrough Bridge to handle as Christian Fox’s Selby Town cruised to a five-star victory to maintain their play-offs push.
Worsbrough, who in fairness did okay in spells, could not cope with Clapham and Flanagan and the game was over at half-time as Selby led 3-0.
Flanagan grabbed a hat-trick, with Clapham and Dan Davison scoring one goal each.
For Worsbrough, whose manager Luke Forgione’s hopes of winning the NLY manager of the month award for February look to have gone up in smoke after one week, it was also deja-vu as Selby won by the same score-line in Barnsley back in November and even led 3-0 at the break in that encounter.
The visitors survived several chances before Selby took the lead in the 25th minute and never looked back.
Flanagan was the provider as he did all the work on the left-side before laying the goal on a plate for Clapham who fired in from close range.
The second goal had an element of controversy about it as Flanagan looked offside when he received the ball from Davison.
The finish was exquisite though – a rocket into goalkeeper Ross Pritchard’s top corner.
Selby have been 2-2 specialists in recent weeks with three consecutive draws of that kind so some were probably concerned Worsbrough would hit back.
Fortunately for the Robins, Flanagan converted a deflected free kick to put the match beyond Worsbrough on the stroke of half-time.
Worsbrough had a Mike Jepps goal controversially disallowed on the hour but the second half was dominated by Selby who created a host of chances.
The score-line could have easily been greater.
The fourth and fifth goals arrived very late on.
Davison pounced on the loose ball from substitute Calum Ward’s saved effort before Flanagan sealed his treble with a last minute penalty.
What They Said
Selby Town manager Christian Fox
“We started well and we kept in down the sides and over the top and it was one of them days when everything came off.
“Harry and Flan linked up well today and the link up play was the best it has been this season so far.
“I don’t really want to say (what score it could have been) but we have had loads of chances.
“The ‘keeper pulled off some worldies but on the flip side at 3-0 they have had a goal disallowed for offside which looked fine from where I was standing.
“But to be fair 5-0 was a fair result.”
Worsbrough Bridge manager Luke Forgione
“We didn’t create loads but I thought we started the game alright and played more in their half.
“But they have quality in the final third and we couldn’t handle them and that’s the truth.
“They have lads who score 15 goals each a season.
“We did talk about that and we couldn’t handle them.
“At 2-0 we should have had a penalty and there are arguments that the second goal was offside but that’s just picking at things.
“They were the better side than us and they deserved to win.”
