Christian Fox says the superb run of form Selby Town have been on deserves huge credit.
Fox’s men are sixth after one league defeat in 13 – the 4-0 loss to Harrogate Railway in January – and the Robins boss says it has been a massive effort.
“If you look back at when we got battered by Hallam in October we have played 14 games since and only been beaten once,” Fox told Non League Yorkshire.
“The home form hasn’t been great at times and the Glasshoughton and Harrogate defeats weren’t great.
“But they were probably freak results as 13 games and only one defeat is pretty decent at any level.
“I think a big thing is the togetherness in the changing room.
“We have kept a small squad and we only had three subs for the Worsbrough win last week.
“We have done that on purpose as we have stuck with the lads who have stuck by us.
“It is a two-way thing and since the budget was cut around the Hallam game we have gone on a run because the camaraderie and the team spirit has pulled us through in games.
“It does play a part at any level but especially at this level when they are not together every day of the week and they’re only training once a week.”
Selby are three points behind fifth-placed Rossington Main and Fox adds that it will be an impressive achievement if they finish in the play-offs.
“If you look at Hallam and North Ferriby you know fine that their budgets are a far way from what we are,” he said.
“At any level budgets speak and those two budgets-wise should be the top two.
“Anything from eighth and above this season I think we have probably overachieved budget-wise.
“The aim is still the play-offs but as I said to the lads we take every game as it comes.
“You look at the Worsbrough win and you think you can beat anyone but then you go back to the Harrogate Railway and you think you can get beat by any team.
“It is a funny league and we picked up a point at both Swallownest and Dronfield.
“They’re down there but fighting for their lives and there is no easy games.
“We just have to look after ourselves.”
Selby go into the visit to Glasshoughton Welfare on the back of the 5-0 demolition of Worsbrough Bridge – a performance Fox was thrilled with.
“It was probably up there as the top one (of the season) as it was for the full 90,” he said.
“We have had decent score-lines here but it was nice to win as we hadn’t won at home for two months so it was pleasing to give something back to the fans who have been loyal.”
