Football Idol

Steven Gerrard

Biggest influence on football career

Mostly seeing what my dad (ex-Barnsley player Gordon) achieved and wanting or trying to re live his stories

Career Highlight

Young Liam Owen (left) playing for Nostell during the game he scored a hat-trick. Picture: Steve Pennock

Probably my first NCEL hat-trick playing up front with my brother (for Nostell), scoring 5 between us and linking up for every goal.

Most Memorable Game

Liam Owen played for Ossett Town in 2017

Solihull Moors away in FA Cup for Ossett Town, atmosphere was incredible and was a pleasure been apart of it!

Lowest moment in football

Liam Owen (left), pictured playing for Worsbrough against Emley during the Dave Mace era. Owen was sent off during this game after making offensive comments to the referee

Not had to many lows in football, probably my first sending off for Worsbrough Bridge (against Emley) having just scored moments before!

Biggest regret in football

Not sticking it out and nailing myself down at a higher level when things wasn’t going my way, maybe from been too young!

Funniest moment in football

All away days on coaches was class can’t pick a certain one but as we say win or lose on the booze, some class times on the coach back!

First semi-professional manager

Former Athersley Rec and Nostell Miners Welfare joint manager Jason Dodsworth
Ex-Athersley chief Sean Margison

Jason Dodsworth and Sean Margison (at Athersley Rec) both great people and coaches welcomed me and some other youngsters in and let us play with smile on our faces.

Non League Debut

Barton Town away with Athersley Rec at right back, never played there before but was now or never for Rec as we were sitting in relegation zone and had loads of injury’s so had to rope a few young ones in from reserves, me and (Kai Hancock) and from there I think we won 4 out of 5 to help keep us up!

First Red Card in Non League

Handy-looking Dodworth hard-man Liam Owen squaring up in the first half

Worsbrough Bridge vs Emley just scored and got sent off moments later wasn’t a very good thing to do maybe just over hyped after scoring equaliser.

First and Best Non League Goal

Liam Owen scoring an overhead kick for Dodworth

Can’t remember first, was in the Rec era but maybe only a tap in but best goal would be for Dodworth been a few 2 over head kicks and a 35 yard free kick. Don’t matter how they go in so I’ll stick with all my goals are my best goals as long as we have 3 points!

What do you want to achieve in football in the future?

Liam Owen celebrates a goal

I would of loved to continue playing football higher trying to get high as possible, but 2 kids now and hard for all travelling and I love my time at Dodworth so I’ll happily play rest of my days for the Miners.

Favourite Non League Ground

Tadcaster Albion, don’t know why but just like the pitch always seemed to play well there!
