Gonzalez fires Ilkley to safety

North West Counties League First Division North Round-Up

Ilkley Town striker Kevin Gonzalez

Star striker Kevin Gonzalez fired Sam Dexter’s Ilkley Town to safety with a double in the 2-0 final day win over AFC Blackpool.

Ilkley simply had to win in one of the biggest games in the club’s history as Ashton Town and AFC Darwen won their respective fixtures.

Ilkley went for broke and Gonzalez eased any tension with a brilliant header to break the deadlock.

The decisive second goal came straight after the break when Josh Bowers teed up Gonzalez up for simple tap-in.

Golcar United lost 3-0 to champions Bury AFC.

Paddy Sykes scored in the first minute for Campion who were eventually beaten 7-1 at Cleator Moor Celtic.

Campion made the very astute tactical decision to bring on potential hero, point rescuer and match-winner Lee Ashforth as an outfield player in the second half to salvage something but even he wasn’t able to play the caped crusader.
