North West Counties League First Division North
Ash Connor says Golcar United don’t plan on standing still after their promotion to Step 5 football.
Golcar have continued their meteoric rise from the now-defunct West Riding County Amateur League after winning the North West Counties League First Division North play-off final last week.
Golcar will move to within one promotion of the Northern Premier League and Connor is hoping for more success.
“We need to know whether we will be in the NCEL or North West and I don’t know when they make the decision,” Connor told Non League Yorkshire.
“Wherever we go we’ll be happy with.
“We want to go up and be challenging and going for it again.
“We don’t want to be making the numbers up.
“We need to sit down with the committee and get a plan together.
“We are ambitious and we want to kick on.”
Talking about progressive clubs in the Yorkshire region, Golcar are certainly one.
Considering they were a club playing on just a field five years ago, their attendances are astonishing.
The number of supporters who travelled for the play-off final at Holker Old Boys was amazing too.
“The celebrations were unbelievable,” Connor said.
“I think there was 250 people from Golcar up there which was great.
“It is ridiculous when you look where we have come from.
“When we first took over we had 20 folk watching us.
“We have had 500 or 600 people for some games.”
Connor also reserved praise for their play-off final hero – club legend Ben Burnett.
“Ben Burnett has been on the journey right from when we started as an amateur team,” he said.
“He scored two goals away at Campion when we won our first league.
“He scored our first goal at Non League level.
“He scored our first FA Vase goals and now he’s got the goal to get us promoted.
“He’ll get the key to the village now.”
Burnett hit the winner in extra-time – eight minutes from the end and Connor won’t forget the day.
“The whole occasion was brilliant.” he said.
“We made sure we were really well organised with everything we did.
“It is a tough place to go is Holker.
“I think only a couple of teams have won there this year and we have now!
“It was definitely the greatest day in the club’s history and I’d go as far as to say it is my proudest achievement.
“Even though I won the league 20 years ago with Harrogate Town, I think Saturday was better.”
