Title is Wakefield’s to lose after victory at Swinton

EV2 Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Round-Up

Premier Division

The title is Wakefield AFC’s to lose after an outstanding 1-0 win in the crunch showdown at rivals Swinton Athletic.

Victories over Wombwell Main, Oughtibridge and Dodworth Miners Welfare will guarantee the crown for Wakefield, whose title chances didn’t even look realistic several weeks.

American-Brazilian manager Gabe Mozzini has produced a miracle and the win at Swinton is his greatest moment so far in the role.

The stakes were huge.

For Swinton it was their last game of the season and victory for them would have secured the title.

However, it was not to be their night as James Morris headed home the second half after meeting Mason Rubie’s cross.

Swinton are relying massively on favours as they need Wakefield to drop points in two of their final three games.

Dodworth Miners Welfare sharp-shooter Liam Owen

Because of Wakefield’s win, Dodworth’s title hopes remain alive, but their pulse is faint.

Dodworth ensured their engine did not break down on an old foe’s turf as they battled to win 2-1 in a hard-fought contest at North Gawber.

Brothers Jack and Liam Owen scored.

Matt Blakey struck for Gawber in the close encounter.

To pip Wakefield, Dodworth will have to win to score a lot of goals in their next two games to overhaul their rival’s huge goals difference.

They would then have to beat Wakefield on the final day.

Donavan Cotton suffered his first defeat since his appointment as interim Houghton Main manager.

Harry Steeple got both goals as Houghton were beaten 3-2 at Oughtibridge who will finish in the top six.

The top five or four is a possibility as well if they win their remaining three games.

Division One

Handsworth Reserves are officially up as Denaby Main drew 2-2 at Sheffield Union.

Wombwell Town now just need to avoid defeat against Denaby on Saturday to finally secure their elusive promotion to the top flight.
