EV2 Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division
A big crowd is expected at Wombwell Main on Monday night when Terry Simon’s young guns lock horns with title-chasing Wakefield AFC (kick off 6pm).
A Wakefield victory in the mouth-watering fixture could put them potentially one win away from winning taking the crown, just a couple of months after many doubted their top five credentials.
But, Wombwell have form for causing upsets as they beat Swinton Athletic on home soil several weeks ago.
The prize for Wombwell, if they win, is also a likely very creditable top four finish.
Dodworth Miners Welfare and Swinton are bound to be watching with interest and praying Wombwell can pull off a headlining result.
Swinton need Wakefield to drop points in two of their final three games to become champions.
Dodworth play Wakefield on the final day on May 14th and the are unlikely to overhaul Wakey’s superior goals difference.
That means they need Wombwell to win.
The task facing Wombwell is huge as Wakefield have yet to lose under manager Gabe Mozzini.
Back when the two sides met in January, whilst Wakefield won 5-0, the title-chasing side were struggling to stay in the top five.
The game was also Mozzini’s first game in charge and he has now presided over 14 league games and won 12 and drawn two of them.
His side have also scored 45 goals and conceded just six during his reign.
Looking at those stats alone, a Wombwell win would be remembered for years.
