EV2 Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division
Wakefield AFC 2-0 Dodworth Miners Welfare
Toolstation NCEL-bound Wakefield AFC enjoyed the perfect day as the title was sealed in front of a record crowd and their Brazilian-American owners who flew in from New York on Friday.
Goals early-on in each half from Danny Youel and Owen Kirman ensured Dodworth Miners Welfare were defeated and Wakey’s long unbeaten run under title-winning boss Gabe Mozzini continued.
It was always going to be Wakefield’s afternoon in the carnival atmosphere.
Dodworth, who had players missing, needed to win by eight goals to snatch the title – it was never going to happen.
The visitors did create moments of danger and had a goal disallowed, but the powerfully-organised Wakefield side were ultimately too strong for them.
Dodworth could not do much about Youel’s quality opener.
The midfielder curled the ball home from the edge of the penalty area – leaving goalkeeper Josh Herring with no chance.
Herring, arguably the best stopper in the top flight, then kept his side in the game with a fine save from sharp-shooter Jake Morrison’s close range header.
The title-clinching goal – eight minutes into the second stanza – actually came from one of Dodworth’s best chances.
Captain Aaron Brotherton had weaved his way into the box and forced a solid stop from the Wakefield goalkeeper.
The resulting corner was cleared and Youel’s long punt flew over a badly-positioned Aaron Parlett and Kirwan sprinted away and coolly slotted past Herring.
Brotherton would have a better opportunity later as he went through one-on-one – only to be denied again.
Substitute Matt Jacobs also went close with a header for Dodworth.
Wakey created more chances themselves and Herring would deny Bruno Bagi.
